Biography
JILLIAN SHERIDAN STONECIPHER represents clients in a wide range of litigation in trial and appellate courts in matters involving, among other things, administrative and constitutional law, intellectual property, and contracts. Jillian advocates for her clients from complaint through appeal, leading teams writing critical motions and briefs, presenting compelling oral argument, developing litigation strategy, and taking cases to trial. She has worked with clients on a broad range of matters, including matters involving pharmaceuticals, healthcare regulations, the First Amendment, and professional associations.
Prior to joining Sidley, Jillian served as a law clerk for the Honorable Gregg J. Costa of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and for the Honorable Barbara M. G. Lynn, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.
Jillian received her J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School and her undergraduate degrees from the University of Texas at Austin where she served as editor in chief of The Daily Texan.

Jillian’s recent matters include:
- Representing a trade association in a First Amendment lawsuit challenging a state attorney general’s document demand, which resulted in the state attorney general withdrawing the demand.
- Representing a cable television services company in successfully defending against a preliminary injunction that sought to require the company to carry certain channels and obtaining fees through an anti-SLAPP motion.
- Representing a biopharmaceutical developer in a series of cases asserting the company’s patent rights against potential infringers.
- In the D.C. Circuit, arguing in support of the court’s exercise of jurisdiction over whistleblower challenges to I.R.S. decisions.
- Challenging regulations implementing the No Surprises Act on behalf of healthcare providers in district court and the Fifth Circuit.
- Representing a medical technology company in a successful challenge to Federal Circuit law regarding the patent law doctrine of assignor estoppel in the Supreme Court in Minerva Surgical, Inc. v. Hologic, Inc.
- Obtaining a decision in favor of a specialty pharmaceutical company at a trial asserting theft of trade secrets and breach of contract before the American Arbitration Association.
- Representing a nonprofit foundation in cases raising constitutional, Administrative Procedure Act, and state law challenges to use of park land, including successfully opposing a motion for preliminary injunction.
- Representing an author in a First Amendment challenge to a decision of the Illinois Department of Corrections to ban the author’s book, including deposing named defendants and expert witness.
- Representing a nonprofit which advises state leaders regarding the conduct of elections and litigation relating to elections, including advising regarding election and litigation risks based on states’ laws, emergent facts, including the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, and constitutional requirements.
