Sidley’s Capital Litigation Project ensures that inmates incarcerated on Alabama’s death row have access to high-quality legal representation, perhaps for the first time since their arrest. We have represented 23 prisoners to date, traveling to Alabama to visit our clients, interview witnesses and participate in hearings. Since the Project’s inception, more than 185 Sidley partners, counsel and associates, along with legal assistants and project assistants, have volunteered more than 145,000 hours to these cases.

Sidley’s ability to represent Alabama’s death row inmates effectively has been greatly supported by the Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit organization based in Montgomery, Alabama, that provides ongoing guidance to Sidley’s lawyers on Alabama postconviction practice and procedure.
