Biography

LIZ SCHUBERT is a leading lawyer focusing her practice on derivatives and trading for investment management clients. She is the founding member of Sidley’s Buy Side Derivatives practice and global co-chair of Sidley’s Derivatives industry group, which has grown significantly under her leadership, earning accolades that include top-tier rankings in Chambers USA. As a result of Liz’s long history advising some of the largest investment managers on derivatives trading matters, she is highly ranked in Chambers USA for Nationwide Derivatives (2025) and was recommended by Legal 500 United States for Structured Finance: Derivatives and Structured Products (2025). Liz has been named to The Hedge Fund Journal’s “50 Leading Women in Hedge Funds” list (2025). She has been recognized since 2018 by Who’s Who Legal as one of the world’s top lawyers in Private Funds. She is a member of Sidley’s award-winning Investment Funds practice, which has also been awarded top band rankings by Chambers USA. The practice was named “Law Firm of the Year” in Private Funds/Hedge Funds Law 2022 in U.S. News – Best Lawyers® “Best Law Firms.” 

Liz’s client list boasts some of the world’s largest and most prestigious investment managers. Her clients feature a comprehensive range of strategies, including long/short equity, private equity, digital assets, global credit, value, multi-strategy, and opportunistic. She handles a high volume of work for well-established managers as well as new launches. This experience gives her a unique vantage point for the terms top flight clients are able to obtain in their derivatives documentation for a diverse array of products. Liz values the opportunity to work closely with clients to understand their business priorities. This enables her to identify derivatives trading solutions that optimize profitability while managing contractual risks to obtain practical and effective results. Clients prize Liz’s guidance on agreements that include brokerage, digital assets, swaps, stock lending, futures, options, repos, and derivatives. She handles documentation for speculative investments, hedging purposes and structured financing vehicles.

Liz invests a significant amount of time studying new regulatory and market developments and the impact these will have on clients. This has earned her recognition as a market leader and a frequent speaker featured by leading industry groups like the International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA). This combination of experience enriches her knowledge base, enabling her to achieve economies of scale and excellent results.
