Biography

EMILY WOODRING is a senior managing associate in the litigation group in the firm’s Chicago office. Her practice focuses on a wide range of complex commercial litigation and disputes, government and internal investigations, antitrust litigation, and accountants and professional liability actions. She has represented individual and corporate clients in both federal and state courts and has experience in all phases of litigation, including drafting pleadings, dispositive motions and other briefs, handling all aspects of discovery, and trial.

Emily earned her J.D. from Yale Law School. While in law school, she served as Executive Editor of the Yale Journal on Regulation as well as Project Editor of the Yale Law Journal. She also worked in the Ethics Bureau at Yale clinic, assisting death penalty clients with ineffective assistance of counsel claims and advising lawyers on legal ethical dilemmas. As part of her clinical work, Emily co-drafted a National Association for Public Defense ethics opinion on defense-generated evidence. Emily additionally taught undergraduates as the Head Teaching Fellow for a Yale College lecture and two seminars on computer science and the law, covering topics such as digital search and seizure, data privacy and breaches, copyright and fair use, censorship, and net neutrality.

Emily received her bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Yale University. The Psi Chi International Honors Society (Psychology) inducted her in her junior year.

Prior to joining Sidley, Emily clerked for Judge Edmond E. Chang of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. She was also an associate at a global law firm, where she represented clients in relation to white collar, antitrust, and securities litigation matters. Emily previously worked for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Enforcement Division in New York and as a legal and financial analyst at a global white-collar litigation boutique.

Community Involvement

Membership & Activities

  • Emily serves on the Board of Directors for the Yale Journal on Regulation, a top-ranked law review covering regulatory and administrative law published at Yale Law School. She is also a Director for the Yale Journal on Regulation Fund.
  • Emily additionally is co-chair of Sidley’s Associate Relations Committee and a member of the Women’s White Collar Defense Association. 

Pro Bono

Emily maintains an active pro bono practice and currently leads a team litigating a fourteen-defendant Section 1983 matter in the Northern District of Illinois. She has previously participated in Supreme Court amicus briefs and petitions for certiorari, criminal appeals, and family and asylum matters.
