Biography

FATIMA BUTT advises on technology transactions and commercial arrangements relating to intellectual property rights and data protection regulatory matters. Fatima has been advising clients on the use of artificial intelligence (AI), IP licensing and ownership, SaaS agreements, outsourcing arrangements and carve-outs, international data transfers, e-Privacy requirements, and the use of biometric and facial recognition technology.

Fatima acts for clients in various sectors, including the technology, media and telecommunications, energy, retail, and life sciences sectors, across transactional and advisory matters.

In 2020, Fatima spent 12 months on secondment to the UK legal team at a leading global technology company and in 2019, Fatima spent six months on secondment to the UK technology and data team at a global energy provider.

Fatima’s experience includes advising:

  • Apollo-managed funds in their acquisition of a majority stake in Kelvion, a leading global provider of energy-efficient heat exchange and cooling solutions, from funds advised by Triton Partners.
  • Stellex Capital Management LLC on the acquisition of the environmental technology business from Dürr Group.
  • A U.S. technology giant on various significant cloud and strategic transactions, including on a US$2.8 billion cloud deal and strategic partnership over a 10-year period for next-generation data and analytics with a major financial exchange.
  • A leading global technology company on various legal topics (including commercial and regulatory matters) regarding its AI offerings, including assisting with customer engagements on the development and deployment of generative AI and large language model capabilities.
  • A major broadcaster and telecommunications company on its renewal and extension of an IP license with a satellite broadcasting technology provider.
  • A U.S. technology giant on a significant cloud and strategic transaction, including a US$1.5 billion investment by the U.S. technology giant, with an AI company in the UAE.
  • A global subscription-based video on demand provider on the data protection implications of using personal data to provide advertisement-based subscriptions to adults and children.
  • A U.S. technology giant on its 10-year strategic partnership with a major airline provider in Qatar.
  • A U.S. technology giant on its strategic partnerships with respect to data center capabilities and cloud solutions in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait.
  • A U.S. technology company on the data protection and healthcare regulation compliance requirements in connection with its launch of a generative AI-based product within the healthcare sector.
  • A U.S. technology giant on the data protection implications of using facial recognition technology in the smart retail market stores and through smart retail market equipment (e.g., shopping trolleys).
