U.S., EU, and UK Impose Additional Sanctions on Belarus

December 7, 2021
On December 2, 2021, the United States (U.S.), European Union (EU), United Kingdom (UK), and Canada each imposed new sanctions on Belarus in a coordinated response to the migrant crisis on the border with Poland and the reported ongoing human rights violations perpetrated by the Lukashenko regime. The designations under the EU, U.S., UK, and Canadian measures are similar but not identical. The new sanctions are expected to affect multiple industries, including financial service providers, petrochemical companies, and agriculture companies, to name a few. Companies should exercise increased scrutiny with respect to, and assess the sanctions implications of, direct and indirect activities in the region and/or with Belarusian parties.
