Biography

STEPHEN SPECTOR represents and advises clients in high-stakes litigation. His experience covers all aspects of a case—from dispositive motions and discovery to trial preparation and appeal. He has appeared in state and federal court, represented clients before regulatory agencies, conducted internal investigations, and drafted certiorari petitions and merits briefs at the United States Supreme Court. 

Previously, Stephen clerked for the Honorable Thomas M. Durkin of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Stephen graduated cum laude from the University of Chicago Law School. While in law school, he earned The Thomas Mulroy Prize for Excellence in Appellate Advocacy and served as President of the Hinton Moot Court Board.

Before law school, Stephen served as a spokesperson at The White House under the Obama Administration. He also worked at the U.S. Department of Education and for the Mayor of Chicago.

Experience

Representative Matters

Stephen’s representative matters include: 

  • Serving as counsel at trial on behalf of lenders in a dispute related to the enforcement of promissory notes.
  • Representing a professional services firm in investigations brought by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and U.S. Department of Justice. 
  • Defending an audit firm in securities litigation in the Southern District of New York and federal and state investigations in a high-profile matter related to allegations of private equity investment fraud.
  • Defending a professional services firm in New York state court against breach of contract, implied covenant, and negligence claims.
  • Defending managers of a Delaware LLC in Illinois Appellate Court in breach of contract and breach of fiduciary action relating to buyout of minority unitholders.
  • Successfully defended a national accounting firm on interlocutory appeal in the Iowa Appellate Court resulting in dismissal of all claims based on a novel legal issue.
  • Successfully defended a global resort company in securities litigation in the District of Nevada relating to the company’s operations in Singapore. 
  • Conducted an internal investigation on behalf of a company’s Board of Directors that led to a resolution with several high-ranking former employees.

Community Involvement

Pro Bono

Stephen also maintains an active pro bono practice. In 2023, he received the firm’s Thomas H. Morsch Award for Pro Bono Achievement in recognition of his work representing an inmate on death row in Alabama.
