MARYANNE KAMAU advises companies, trade associations, and governments on international and EU trade and investment law matters, including market access, investment screening, trade controls (economic sanctions and export controls), and dispute settlement.
In particular, Maryanne’s practice is tailored to helping clients navigate the intricate web of rules and maximize opportunities as they bring products and services to the market. She regularly assists clients mitigate risks arising from investment screening, trade controls, and subsidy controls reviews in the context of complex international transactions. Most recently, Maryanne has been advising on Russia-related sanctions.
In addition, Maryanne advises clients on EU environmental and climate action measures that introduce compliance obligations and impact market access, including, for example, EU product and chemical regulations, vehicle emissions regulations, and the unfolding regulatory initiatives covered by the European Green Deal, such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and the Batteries Regulation. She also assists clients develop regulatory compliance strategies for EU environmental, product regulation, and supply chain due diligence issues.
Maryanne regularly speaks at international conferences and webinars and has also published in academic journals and books on various legal issues central to her practice.

A keen advocate, Maryanne actively participates in Sidley’s pro bono practice through the firm’s Trade for Development Initiative and Emerging Enterprises Pro Bono Program, which provide free legal support to small- and medium-size for-profit enterprises, market-focused non-governmental organizations, least developed and low-income developing countries, and trade associations, in areas related to trade and investment.
